Helen was born December 11, 1929 in Perry, Oklahoma to Otis and Ochle Gould. Helen had 1 brother, 2 sisters, 1 half-brother, and 1 half-sister. She graduated high school in Belleville, Texas and attended business school in Houston, Texas. After working for Magnolia Petroleum Co. in Dallas as a stenographer, she took a job with California Oil Co. in Denver. Shortly afterward, she transferred to Casper and met her husband of 60 years, Stephen Lewis Nicholas at the First Baptist Church Young Adult Group. They were married September 5, 1948. Helen & Stephen were among the 24 charter members that founded Bethel Baptist Church.

Helen became the busy mother of 4 children in 5 years. She helped with Cub Scouts, was a Girl Scout leader, taught Sunday School, was an active member of American Baptist Women, Thrifty Ann Extension Club, United Methodist Women in Rapid City, SD and Hannah's Circle UMW in Casper, a Pink Lady volunteer at WY Medical Center, a Red-Hat Lady, and belonged to an Orchid Club. She made countless bandages for the American Red Cross, blankets for Incarnation Children's Center for children with AIDS in New York City, and food for church functions.

She never tired of visiting the sick, shut-ins, neighbors, or relatives with a pan of homemade cinnamon rolls. She was praised for her cooking and beautiful hand-painted china, hand-made porcelain dolls, quilts, knitted blankets, crochet, embroidery, cross-stitch, sewing, and orchids.

She worked for Bailey School Supply, Man-power, Central States Fairgrounds, the Masonic Lodge, and retired after 15 years at True Oil Company in 1978.

Helen and Stephen are the proud parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents of Barbara Ann Nicholas of Casper, WY, her husband John Elliott, three children, and 6 grandchildren; Dr. Stephen W. Nicholas of Mt. Kisco, NY, his wife Ellen Sargent, and 4 children; Professor Kenneth E. Nicholas of Huntsville, AL, his wife Minda, three children, and 2 grandchildren; and Susan L. Lefevre of Rapid City, SD, her 8 children, and 4 grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents and 1 brother.
